My First Solo Authored Paper! Doctoral Socialization & Black Doctoral Women in Agriculture

Writer: Scholar CroppsScholar Cropps

I got an email bright and early this morning that had me super excited:

"I am pleased to inform you that 'Black doctoral women's socialization experiences in agricultural science and education departments' of Studies in Graduate and Postdoctoral Education has been published on Emerald Insight."

Y'all! I am so. excited. This is my first paper from my dissertation and my first solo-authored paper! My dissertation broadly focused on the experiences of Black women doctoral candidates in agricultural disciplines. This particular paper focuses on their experiences with doctoral socialization. Doctoral socialization is the process where new doctoral students learn the knowledge, behaviors, and values of a specific discipline. This process often happens in the academic department, through advising and mentoring relationships, and conferences. The lens through which I examined their experiences was Critical Race Feminism, a critical social theory used to help us understand how race and racism work with gender and sexism to play dominant roles in the treatment of Black women. I used critical critical narrative inquiry as the methodology. Critical narrative inquiry seeks to understand how narratives (descriptive experiences) intersect with power. The participants in my study were five Black women doctoral candidates at 1862 land grant universities. There were three main themes found during analysis, and they are described in the paper by their site of socialization: the advising relationship, the department, and conferences. I'll stop there, but please let me know if you cannot access the paper and would like a copy!

I've got one more paper I'd like to publish from my dissertation, but I've got to make sure to do my participants right! Speaking of, I'd like to thank Ebony, Errica, Jayei, Karla, and Nahla. I could not have done this without you!

I am annoyed that this research is necessary but honored to do the research for, with, and about Black women.
